NVIDIA and OpenAI announced a historic strategic partnership to deploy at least
10 gigawatts of next-generation NVIDIA AI infrastructure systems, representing millions of GPUs. NVIDIA plans to invest up to
$100 billion gradually in OpenAI, with the initial $10 billion tranche set at a $500 billion valuation, designed to avoid significant dilution. The first gigawatt of systems is expected to be deployed in the
second half of 2026 on NVIDIA’s
Vera Rubin platform, equivalent to
4–5 million GPUs.
The investment will be in cash, primarily used to lease advanced GPU units rather than outright purchase, providing cost flexibility for OpenAI while ensuring access to cutting-edge technology. This partnership marks the first direct purchase from NVIDIA by OpenAI, rather than relying on cloud providers. Some criticism has arisen over the “circular” nature of the arrangement, as NVIDIA invests in OpenAI, which in turn commits to filling those systems with NVIDIA GPUs.
